The 28-Day Challenge: Are Your Records Complete?
Many drivers fall foul of the law not while they are behind the wheel, but during the time they aren't driving. Under current EU and UK rules, every LGV driver must maintain a full, unbroken set of records for the current day and the previous 28 days. This includes:
- Other Work: Even if it’s yard work or office duties away from the vehicle.
- Periods of Availability (POA).
- Rest, Breaks, and Annual/Sick Leave.
Failing to account for work undertaken away from the vehicle can result in a £300 roadside penalty per offence—a heavy price to pay for a simple administrative oversight.
Manual Entries: Complexity Simplified
Digital tachograph manual entries can be notoriously fiddly. If you find entering multiple 24-hour periods complex, there are legal alternatives. Our training covers how to correctly annotate the reverse of a printout or use analogue charts to ensure your rest and break periods are logged accurately, preventing avoidable infringements.
Top Tip: The DVSA currently accepts "block recording" for fixed weeks (Monday to Sunday). This can save significant time and stress—provided it is done correctly.
